The Uptown could have been one of the best Open Mics around. Great stage, sound and lighting. I mean REALLY GREAT STAGE! The biggest perceived problem was that the alcohol bar was in a different room than the performance. I say perceived because it did not stop regular bands from playing on the stage just the Open Mic people. The Open Mic initially was hosted by Austin Vice until Austin ripped his Achilles' tendon skateboarding and was replaced by GG Tanaka. In the beginning the Open Mic had performances under the lights on the main stage. Those were the days people were telling their friends about the great stage, sound and lighting. There were some tremendous performances on that stage during Open Mic Night and I met some good friends there. However, not enough drinks were being sold so the Open Mic was moved to the end of the bar near the entrance to remind people to drink. That was the beginning of the end. GG tried to keep it growing but it eventually died and that's too bad because it was really a great stage.
