About Artmuse

Fall 2007, I went on tour across the US to play a couple of festivals and filmed open mics both with & without Slim at venues across the U.S.A. I'm in the process of transferring, editing, posting and backing up all the music footage. That will take several months and then I can get to the footage of The Road. I'm working on the documentary project as the end result, but we're still in Stage 1. We've met so many talented artists who are still under the radar, but worthy of attention and development. The venues have been really supportive of our vision. As a songwriter, I've been told many times I'm one of those artists whose performance, once experienced, just keeps running through your brain. The straightforward songwriting draws you in. Then you realize that the veneer of simplicity belies the depth, power and complexity of my works. People really like the vocals at the live shows. I always get comments about that. As a longtime San Francisco Bay Area singer-songwriter, I have honed my craft on the stages of the Bay Area’s icon venues: San Francisco’s Sacred Grounds Cafe and The Mad Dog in the Fog, Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage and the Starry Plough, and classic rooms where the music matters more than any current fad. I'm an “omni-instrumentalist” though I tend to prefer various strings and woodwinds. I do most of my songwriting on my Taylor guitar, though I've also been exploring Mom's piano recently. My tunes are a varied experience in blues, folk and rock that keeps winning new fans. Well respected by my fellow musicians, I've contributed flute tracks to three songs on Allene Rohrer’s “Synergism” CD (released in November 2001), and appeared as a regular solo acoustic performer on Grizzly Radio’s “Morning Sushi” and "tweener" at the High Sierra Music Festival in the mountains of California. Greg Moore (aka Sandycoates) of The Moore Brothers says I'm a “rad folksinger.” My musical roots are in New York, where I studied jazz improv with Dave Burns (formerly Dizzy Gillespie’s Big Band trumpeter), Arnie Lawrence and Bud Johnson (through the International Art of Jazz) and received my Bachelor of Music in music education (flute) from Ithaca College in 1988. In the Bay Area, I've devoted my time, art and energy to furthering the musical arts in California as co-founder of the Recycling Porpoises, a Berkeley/Oakland musicians’ collective with TomKat Roar et al. I produced the acoustic showcase series at the Thornhill Coffeehouse in Montclair/Oakland and later at the Missouri Lounge, presenting a wide variety of local talent, and continue to be active in the local music scene. I occasionally guest host the Starry Plough's open mic when Joan Pez needs the night off. April 2002 saw the release of my debut CD, “Apotheosis” (no, it's not a disease - it's a high point or pinnacle), on the Artmuse Records label. Although I assume the role of producer, ornamental instrumentation and all the vocal tracks, this is no solo “ego trip.” Also appearing are local artists Pat Nevins (Workingman's Ed, Ragged Glory) on lead guitar, Mike Handler on harmonica, Jean Kirk on bass, and Don Bourne on drums and percussion. And no one can forget Ken & Andy on "Party". Borders Books in the midwest somewhere was scared I'd play the full version live...listen for yourself at the Artmuse site on the virtual CD player. In 2003 Artmuse released Pat Nevins "Shakey Zimmerman", a collection of alternating Bob Dylan & Neil Young tunes with Barry Sless (DNB, Phil Lesh & Friends) and Bill Laymon (DNB, NRPS). I produced the project and put a lot of time energy and love into it. The resulting CD sounds great. It's always a pleasure working with pros in the studio. October 2004 was the official website release of my second CD of original tunes, "WAKENING", featuring the formidable talents of Bill Laymon (David Nelson Band, NRPS) on bass, Tal Morris (Huey Lewis & The News) on lead guitars, Pete Sears (Hot Tuna, etc), and the return of Don Bourne on drums. Once again, I wear multiple hats producing and performing rhythm guitars, vocals and flute. You can check out the tunes at www.artmuserecords.com and get more info, pictures and song downloads at www.myspace.com/ArtmuseRecords I've posted some videos (and will add more) from the tour at www.youtube.com/ArtmuseRecords Do yourself a favor…share some sonic happiness. You’ll never forget the experience. Increase your peace with music

Comments?

Slim is working very hard to get all his accumulated music footage posted. It takes a lot of mental energy to get it all done. Please be patient if you're waiting for him to post your music. He's also redesigning the structure of this website to allow everyone to post comments and be interactive. Thanks Slim!
