This open mic was almost a decade at Espresso Garden & Cafe in San Jose before that venue closed down. In April 2006, the South Bay Folks moved to the hip, student- oriented Mission City Coffee Roasting venue. Free wi-fi, and plenty of outlets for laptops make this brick-walled, high-ceilinged venue about as hip as Santa Clara gets.
This very popular open mic is necessarily strict about its its sign-up (out of a jar, you pick your spot as your name is pulled) and performance (10 min/2 songs each - if you're not present when called, you get bumped to the end of the night) rules. However, if your name is in the jar and you don't get a spot, they'll give you a rain check guaranteeing you a spot for the next open mic night. This is a specifically musical and acoustic open mic (no spoken word), they also have a piano available for you.
